The Glenrock herd of Charolais was founded in 2006 and has enjoyed some notable success since then, including the sale of Glenrock Eiger for 6000gns to the Nisbet family of Sorn, Mauchline.
Eiger, a Lowerffrydd Benhurr son out of Glenrock Blancmange has since gone on to sire a number of exciting progeny, including Carwood Holly, which was reserve junior female champion at the 2013 Royal Highland Show for the Wight family.
He was also sire of pedigree heifer Smithstons Holly from James Nisbet which was reserve female and reserve overall champion commercial animal at the same show. Eiger was also the sire of the 2013 Smithfield supreme champion, Bang Tidy from Drew Hyslop, which was bred by Hugh and Lynne Dunlop, Ochiltree.
The Charolais herd is kept as a small, select herd with the aim of breeding strong, correct commercial bulls for sale from home and at the breed society sales at Carlisle and Stirling.
This Farleycopse Telemarque daughter is out of Glenrock Vanilla and is dam of 6000gns bull Glenrock Eiger and also our show heifer Glenrock Harriet which was first in her class and female and reserve breed champion at Cumberland Show 2013.
Sired by French sire Suzeringie, Dream is out of Ballymena Parade, a Bassett Judge daughter and is a strong breeding cow for the herd.
Another daughter of Ballymena Parade, Eclipse is by Lowerffrydd Benhurr, making her a paternal sister to 6000gns bull Glenrock Eiger.
This in-calf heifer is a full sister to Glenrock Eiger, being by Lowerffrydd Benhurr and out of Glenrock Blancmange We have great hopes for Glamour as a future brood cow in the herd.
This show winning heifer is another from the excellent breeding combination of Benhurr and Blancmange and was first in her class and female and reserve breed champion at Cumberland Show 2013.
The Charolais herd is served using exclusively AI bulls, with no stock bull currently kept on the farm. With a small herd we find that using AI gives us the best opportunity to access the top genetics in the breed and ensure progression in the breeding programme.
This 30,000gns sire has been used in the herd to great effect and has left an even, well fleshed crop of calves. Bolinger is by the renowned sire Dingle Hoffmeister and out of a Maerdy Othello daughter.
Hoffmeister is a renowned sire of powerful, high figured progeny and has also been used across the Glenrock herd. He is sired by Bradley Roderick and out of Rushmore Champagne, a Mountpleasant Rufus daughter.
This easy calving sire has been used recently with the aim of breeding both bulls and females of scope and scale for the future. Digger is sired by Balthayock Adonis and is out of a Blelack Montgomery daughter.
Without a doubt the most successful sire used to date in the Glenrock herd, Benhurr has sired both males and females of exceptional quality for us, including Glenrock Eiger and Glenrock Harriet. This Doonally New son is out of Lowerffrydd Penny, a Moyness Lincoln daughter.
