A number of female families have proved to be the bedrock of the Glenrock herd over the years and much of the herds success can be traced back to three influential families. The current breeding policy is focussed on expanding the influence of these families further to maximise the quality of the herd.
This Kype Interrogate daughter is out of Rachels Lesley, a Rachels Eureka daughter and has proven to be an exceptional breeder for the herd, producing top drawer males and females.
Progeny include Glenrock Victory, a Rocky son sold to Elgin Jones in May 2006 for 13,000gns and Glenrock Bianca, a Hafodlas Llion daughter sold for 20,000gns to Messrs Smiths of Bloxham at the Red Ladies sale in 2007.
Other notable progeny include Glenrock Dauphin, a Mas Du Clo son sold for 6000gns in May 2010 and Glenrock Eagle sold for 10,000gns in February 2011. This Fieldson Alfy son was also interbreed champion at the first Stars of the Future calf show at Forfar in 2010.
Glenrock Fortune, another bull out of Spangle, sold for 16,000gns in May 2012 to Jack Neale, Cornwall, with Fortune being a son of Wilodge Vantastic.
Retained daughters include Glenrock Campari and Glenrock Fantastic, with Fantastic, a daughter of Haltcliffe Vermount, having been reserve breed champion at both the Royal Highland and Great Yorkshire shows in 2013 and champion of champions at Northumberland County Show and reserve junior champion at the Royal Highland in 2012.
She was also part of the interbreed team of four at the same show and interbreed champion at Westmorland Show 2012, as well as winning the North West heifer Derby at the same show. Fantastic also won her class at the 2011 Stars of the Future calf show, Forfar.
A son of Spangle, Glenrock Grandslam, won the North West bull Derby in 2012 too. Grandslam is by Ampertaine Commander and was sold at Carlisle in October 2012 for 5500gns
There are also a number of granddaughters of Spangle coming in to the herd and she has also been flushed, with 12 embryos due in the coming months
Sired by the herd’s former French stock bull Marquis, Saspirilla is out of Glenrock Manilla and goes back to the original embryos bought as the foundation of the herd in 1982.
Saspirilla’s first calf was Glenrock Ventura, a Glenrock Spartacus son which stood reserve supreme champion at Carlisle in May 2006 behind the now legendary Wilodge Vantastic and went on to sell for 24,000gns to the Handley family’s Gunnerfleet herd. Ventura has since been used widely in a number of herds and is sire of 20,000gns Ampertaine Commander and 32,000gns Ampertaine Elgin, both bred by James McKay, Northern Ireland.
A full brother to Ventura, Glenrock Domino, then sold for 8000gns at Carlisle in May 2010, while Glenrock Drambuie, a Bremore Artist daughter, was champion pedigree animal at the Royal Highland Winter Fair in 2009.
Saspirilla’s daughter Glenrock Arianna, by Cloughhead Lord, is dam of Glenrock Dictator, a Bremore Artist son which was first at the Royal Highland and won the North West bull Derby before going on to sell for 10,000gns.
Glenrock Caprice, a Glenrock Spartacus daughter and full sister to Glenrock Ventura, is another of Saspirilla’s daughters which is proving particularly successful, being dam of Glenrock Elusive, a Wilodge Vantastic daughter which was first at the Royal Highland in 2012 as well as being part of the interbreed winning team of four. She also won her class at Cumberland Show and Agri Expo last year and was North West Heifer Derby champion in the same year. Elusive was also interbreed champion at Cumberland Show 2012.
Another of Saspirilla’s daughter’s, Glenrock Dream, a Kype Interrogate daughter is dam of Glenrock Flip, sold for 7500gns at Carlisle in May 2012. Retained young heifers out of Saspirilla include Glenrock Enchantress and Glenrock Glayva.
A daughter of Crownhead Busby, Juniper is out of Glenrock Celeste and has bred a number of top quality bulls and females, including Glenrock Spartacus, a Kype Interrogate son which was used extensively in the herd and is sire of 24,000gns Glenrock Ventura. Spartacus, which was male and reserve junior champion at the Royal Highland in 2003 was later sold to Andrew Davies privately for use in his noted show calf producing herd.
Juniper is also dam of Glenrock Ulysses, a Romeo son which was sold to Greenmount College, Northern Ireland, and also dam of Glenrock Vagrant, another by Romeo which was sold privately to Derek Hume of the Culnagechan herd, Northern Ireland.
She is also mother to Glenrock Nimrod, a bull calf sold at four months old to the Hartside herd of Messrs Thompson for 4000gns. He is by Redrock Inspiration.
An open flush from Juniper was sold at the International Limousin Congress in 2004 for 3000gns, with four embryos resulting. One of these was Hartlaw Blueberry, dam of Hartlaw Excaliber, sold to the Goldies and Dumbreck herds for 22,000gns.
Retained daughters from Juniper include Unisson, a Romeo daughter, Cellest, a Ronick Hawk daughter and Beatrix, a Genial daughter.
Glenrock Riviera and Riverdance, both by Marquis, have also been retained, with embryos from both of these sold to the USA in recent years.
And a number of Juniper’s descendents are also joining the herd, including Glenrock Babylon, a Ronick Hawk daughter out of Glenrock Unite, a Juniper granddaughter, Glenrock Eclipse, a Bremore Artist daughter out of Glenrock Unisson and Glenrock Cupid, a Nenuphar daughter out of Glenrock Riviera.
